A Very Big Rock

Currently I’m sitting in a square in Gibraltar eating English Fish and Chips. Gibraltar is a peninsula off of Spain that is under British rule. So hopefully the fish and chips are good!

After getting off the boat this morning, we got into a taxi for a tour of all the sites in the area.

Gibraltar has a population of 30,000 people and was mainly a military town throughout it’s history. Now it is a financial centre since it is tax free. The first thing we saw was not even an “official” point of interest but an airport runway. What was special about this runway is that as we drove up the gates went down and a plane landed right in front of us. The road goes right over the runway! So instead of a train crossing it is a plane crossing!

Anyway we then proceeded to travel through tunnels and up windy hills around the area, seeing monkey’s that are everywhere in the wild, exploring caves in the mountains and looking at the spectacular view.

The town below is very quaint and pretty. There is a pedestrian area where there are shops and restaurants, all with British influence. This is that I have always heard but never knew anything about. Now that I have visited I see the charm and the beauty of the Rock!

Tomorrow we are a day at sea and then we are off to Barcelona for a day. I’m looking forward to Barcelona since we are familiar with the city and we are excited to show Gavin the sites.
