Thanks to Rochelle, our travel agent who happened to be traveling with us, she recommended Toaromina as our destination in Sicily. And boy… what an amazing pick.
We headed on the train along the coast to the bottom of the town. We then took a very windy road up the mountain to the town which was picturesquely propped up on a mountain side with a view of Mt. Etna and the coast.
We first went to get an overpriced Cappuccino, but the view from the patio was worth every penny. Picture it, Sicily, 2009. For guys sipping cappuccino overlooking the Mediterranean from a mountainside cafe.
So since we were in Sicily, we had to have a Sicilian Cannoli. Damn… tasty. It was filled with cream and wrapped in a deep fried shell which gave it a great buttery taste. It was sooo tasty.
Another site that we went to was the Roman Amphitheatre that was carved into the hill. At first we were reluctant because it cost 6 euros but again, the view was worth it. We could see the town we were just in, the coast, the village above and Mt. Etna. It was breathtakingly beautiful. Totally amazing. You will see in the pictures.
One thing that was really neat about Messina (our port city) and even Toaromina were the tunnels and bridges. Sicily is mountainous as you would probably imagine… and they have these roads that cut across the coast horizontally, disappearing as a tunnel and then reappearing as a bridge. From the coast is pretty amazing to see!
