Arrived in Sydney!
2011-12-27
After a very pleasureable 15 hour flight, we arrived in Australia. The flight was actually pretty easy and with the help of a sleeping pill, it pass quite quickly. I think I managed to sleep 6+ hours, so the rest of the time I could eat and watch movies (No String Attached, Hanna). Jogging pants worked out well... I was comfortable and had lots of room to expand as I ate dim sum, cheese, dinner, breakfast, and a croque monsieur. Also at the end of the trip the flight attend came by and said we were her favorites on this flight...although the competition wasn't too steep, Brad had a total biatch in front of him, the kind who doesn't look happy even when she is straight faced.
Arriving at SYD, we had to wait for the officials to spray the inside of the plane for anything that may have been coming with us from Vancouver. After they let us off, the bags were already circling the carousel waiting for us. So we were out of the airport in about 15 minutes... Immigration was a breeze.
There is a train that takes you from the airport to the city but it was closed due to a blackout. I don't know if that is a power blackout or if it was a strike. Not too sure. But we were herded onto a city bus but luckily we were able to get a seat.
After arriving at the hotel, we headed immediately to Telstra to get ourselves set up with some Internet. We opted to get full pay as you go packages that will give us $500 worth of text / phone, 2GB of data all for $50. Perfect. We are now connected.
Now off to explore the city! It is a little weird to think we are so far away from home... So far Sydney feels like Vancouver... which is nice because it doesn't feel foreign. Although I'm sure some things will be lost in translation at some point during the trip.
Hotel
The Westin Sydney
After a grueling 15 hour flight we arrived at the beautiful Westin Sydney. It seems they are right in the heart of the shopping area and more importantly, around the corner from the Apple Store. You know where there is an Apple Store, there must be good shopping!
The room is quite nice, modern with a glass window that looks into the bathroom. Our view is of a clock tower and the hotel has a beautiful atrium.
