Great Ocean Road Tour

2012-01-09

So much has happened since Melbourne... And it seems like so far away. After Melbourne we headed down the Great Ocean Road. We booked a one night/two day tour with a group of about 20 on a small bus.

We stopped at all the tourist stops along the Great Ocean Road. I think in this case, you need to see the pictures... And the beauty that we experienced.

  • Bell's Beach
  • Wild koalas
  • 12 Apostles
  • London Bridge
  • Bay of Islands

After wrapping up The Great Ocean Road we saw our first wild kangaroo sighting... But not our last. We also saw a wild emu which was so strange. I am still fascinated that kangaroos and emus run rampant... Let alone camels in the desert. These aren't small animals like raccoons and squirrels. Yes, I know there are other wild animals in Canada but none that don't run when you see them!

The evening drive was quite fun, full of hard breaks as we slowed down for crossing kangaroos. That night we were at a hostel with the group in the Grampian mountains. Yes, we did a hostel... But we did have our own room! We awoke early to get our close up visit with some wild kangaroos. We even got to see a Joey hanging out of the mothers pouch... Eating whenever she bent over to eat.

The rest of the day was filled with small hikes and some beautiful scenery including the now famous picture of me jumping on a jutting rock with the majestic valley below.

After lunch we met up with a coach and took a 5 hour ride to Adelaide. The Great Ocean Road sure lived up to its name. I could have set there for hours just watching the waves crash into the shore. So peaceful, so beautiful.

Our day in Adelaide was uneventful. It is a cute city but it doesn't have the energy that Sydney and Melbourne has. And that wraps up our trip to Australia. We flew from Adelaide -> Sydney -> Wellington to start the next chapter in this trip...
